Lilavati Hindu Sanatorium
Reusing, recycling and reducing are not only the three pillars of sustainability but all that of economic feasibility.
Lilavati Hindu Sanatorium is a 100 year old complex with 20 cottages, with a warm teak roof and verandahs with stone and brick walls enclosing habitable spaces within. It is spread over a land area of nearly 8acres in Deolali, Maharashtra, India. The design explores the potential of making it a dynamic community space from a more static one, encouraging interactions with the space and with the people occupying the space as well. The project was aimed at restoring the sanatorium to its original aesthetic beauty, and addressing all structural concerns, thereby enhancing the standard of living for its inhabitants (targetting senior citizens, for their comfortable stay for a duration of 1 week to 1 month).
